Every spring, something truly special happens in the English countryside, when over 9 million tulips bloom across 20 acres in Norfolk for a few short weeks. If you time your visit just right, you can walk right through the fields, which were even featured in the film Wicked.

We finally managed to get tickets to Tulips for Tapping after years on our UK bucket list, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.  If you’re planning a spring trip to England, or looking for a unique day trip from London, this is one experience worth building your itinerary around.

What Is Tulips for Tapping?

Tulips for Tapping is an annual pop-up event in Norfolk, England, featuring the largest tulip field in the UK. The event raises funds for a local hospice, so your visit directly contributes to something meaningful.

Each year, millions of tulips are planted across approximately 20 acres, and while the location changes annually, it is typically near Sandringham Estate. Since the event depends on when the tulips bloom, it usually takes place between mid-April and early May.

What It’s Like to Visit the Tulip Fields

Walking into the fields for the first time felt a bit surreal. The scale is hard to grasp until you see it in person. Rows of vibrant tulips stretch as far as you can see, filling the countryside with color. It felt even bigger than we expected.

Yes, it’s popular and there were plenty of people, but the space is so large that it never felt overcrowded. We were still able to find quiet spots to take photos and enjoy the views.

Like many visitors, I dressed up a bit for photos, and I was glad I did. Just one important tip: skip the nice shoes, as the ground can be muddy and uneven depending on the weather.  No one will see your shoes in the photos so don’t worry about that.

When Do Tulips for Tapping Tickets Go on Sale?

This is one of the trickiest parts of planning your visit. The dates the event will take place are only announced once bloom conditions are confirmed. Then tickets usually go on sale about 10 days before the event begins.

Weekend tickets will sell out very quickly. The best way to stay updated is to follow the Norfolk Tulips on social media so you don’t miss the announcement.  Then set yourself a reminder so that you don’t miss out.

Tickets and Entry Information

Tickets are sold in 45-minute timed entry slots to help manage crowds. In 2026, tickets cost £10 per person, with a maximum purchase of six tickets per booking, plus a £0.50 booking fee. Parking was available for an additional £2.50.

Keep in mind tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Only buy direct through the Norfolk Tulips website, third-parties selling on social media may be a scam.

While your entry time is limited, the atmosphere is relaxed once you’re inside. We ended up enjoying ourselves so much that we stayed a bit longer without any issues. Also, consider arriving about 15 minutes early, as there may be a line to enter.

For a more private experience, you can also look into small group photography workshops hosted by local photographers.

How to Get to Tulips for Tapping

The tulip fields are located in a rural area, and there is no direct public transportation to the site.  It’s best to plan how you will get to the tulips in advance.

Visiting from London By Train

This makes for a very doable and memorable day trip.

Just take a train from London to King’s Lynn (about 1 hour 45 minutes). To get the best price, book tickets in advance for a specific off-peak train time. You can check schedules and book here.

Then, book a round-trip taxi from King’s Lynn to the tulip fields, making sure to arrange your return taxi in advance since cell service at the fields is limited and you won’t want to rely on calling one later.

Driving

If you have a car and feel comfortable driving on rural roads in England, getting to the tulip field is straightforward. Directions will be provided when you purchase your ticket. You’ll need to book parking at the same time as your ticket, and while parking is in a grass field, it’s well organized with staff on hand to direct cars.

The drive takes about 20 minutes from King’s Lynn or an hour from Norwich.

Important Tips Before You Go

What to Wear

Dress up if you want Instagramable photos, long or flowy dresses work especially well, and floral prints or solid bright colors really pop against the tulips. Be sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.

Cell Service

Cell service is very limited at the fields, so it’s best to save directions and booking details ahead of time.

Facilities

Portable toilets are available onsite, but there is no running water.

Weather

The event is open rain or shine, so be prepared for changing conditions.

Dogs

Only assistance dogs are allowed in the tulip field.

Food, Drinks & Picnics

There are several food and drink vendors onsite offering options such as ice cream, coffee, and fish and chips. Dietary options may vary, so it’s best not to rely on specific accommodations. You’re also welcome to bring a picnic, but keep in mind that you cannot eat in the parking lot and seating is informal, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

If you prefer to dine in, The Ffolkes and The Dabbling Duck are great options closeby the tulips. A little bit further in the village of Snettisham, you’ll find some excellent choices like The Rose & Crown and The Old Store.

Accessibility Information

Visitors using wheelchairs or strollers are welcome, but it’s important to be aware of a few limitations. The terrain throughout the fields is uneven and can become muddy or dusty depending on the weather, which may make navigation more challenging. While you won’t be able to go down the rows of tulips themselves (as they are narrow), you can still take in the beautiful views from the ends of the rows.

Make It a Weekend Trip

Norfolk is often overlooked by international travelers, but it’s well worth exploring. You can easily extend your visit by wandering the historic streets of King’s Lynn, visiting Sandringham Estate, and exploring the Norfolk coast. This kind of trip allows you to make the most of your vacation days by combining a unique seasonal experience with a deeper look at a lesser-known part of England.

Where to Stay in Norfolk

If you have the time, we highly recommend turning this into an overnight trip rather than rushing it as a day visit.

King’s Lynn

King’s Lynn makes a convenient and charming base for your visit, with plenty to see beyond the tulip fields. While you’re there, take time to explore the historic King’s Lynn Minster, visit the Lynn Museum to see the fascinating Sea Henge, and stroll through The Walks, a beautiful urban park perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

For accommodation, consider staying at Bank House, a stylish boutique hotel, or Duke’s Head Hotel, a classic and centrally located option with plenty of character.

Near Sandringham Estate

Royal watchers may prefer to stay closeby, near the Sandringham Estate, where the Royal Family spends Christmas. You can visit Sandringham to get a unique glimpse into royal life, with beautifully maintained gardens, woodland walks, and the chance to tour the house when it’s open to the public.

For your stay, you could consider The Dabbling Duck in Great Massingham, a charming B&B known for its incredible food and dog-friendly rooms; The Kings Head Country Hotel in Great Bircham, an Edwardian-style hotel with spacious modern ensuite rooms; or The Ffolkes in Hillington, a former coaching inn transformed into a stylish hotel with unique bedrooms and spa cabins.
